Recall: Family Dollar shoppers should check toothpaste, condoms, pregnancy tests

This is nothing to smile about.

Family Dollar recently issued a voluntary product recall of several varieties of Colgate toothpaste and mouthwash after stores in multiple states failed to store them at the recommended temperature.

This comes on the heels of a separate voluntary recall of over-the-counter pharmaceutical items by the Dollar Tree-owned DLTR franchise last month. Those products, including Clearblue pregnancy tests, Trojan condoms and Polident denture products, were also stored outside of recommended temperatures. The Food and Drug Administration published both recall announcements on Sept. 16, and they began trending on Google searches on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Neither recall notice noted what temperature the affected products had been stored at or for how long. But Family Dollar stated that it is not aware of any consumer complaints or reports of illnesses related to the Colgate products or the over-the-counter pharmaceutical products at this time. The over-the-counter product recall, in particular, was conducted “out of an abundance of caution,” the company wrote.

Family Dollar has notified its affected stores, asking them to check their stock immediately and to stop selling any affected products.

Customers who bought any of the recalled products can return them to the Family Dollar store where they were purchased without a receipt, the notice says.

The over-the-counter product recall affects Family Dollar stores in most states and involves products shipped to stores between May 1 and June 10, 2022.

As noted, customers can return any of these products to the Family Dollar store where they were purchased without a receipt. However, the recall involving the over-the-counter pharmaceutical products does not apply to Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Alaska or Hawaii. According to the company, Family Dollar does not have any stores in Alaska or Hawaii, and no Family Dollar stores in those other states received any products subject to this recall.

For both sets of recalls, customers can contact Family Dollar customer service at 844-636-7687 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern time with any questions or concerns.

If customers suffer adverse medical reactions to any recalled product, the company says they should contact their physician or healthcare provider first. Then they should report adverse reactions or quality problems associated with using the product to the FDA’s MedWatch adverse event reporting program online, by mail or by sending a fax to 800-FDA-0178.

This is just the latest recall announcement from the Family Dollar franchise. Earlier this year, numerous products were pulled and more than 400 stores were temporarily closed after a rodent infestation and other unsanitary conditions were found at an Arkansas distribution center. The FDA alerted the public that food, medicines and cosmetic products from Family Dollar stores in six states could be contaminated.

“We take situations like this very seriously and are committed to providing safe and quality products to our customers,” a Dollar Tree spokesperson told the New York Times after that event. “We have been fully cooperating with all regulatory agencies in the resolution of this matter and are in the process of remediating the issue.”
