Deutsche Lufthansa AG said Tuesday that it has been forced to cancel nearly the entirety of Wednesday’s flight program at major hubs in Germany as a result of strike action that could also lead to cancellations or delays for the rest of the week.
The German airline group said it will call off almost all of its program for Wednesday at its hubs in the cities of Frankfurt and Munich. A total of 678 flights will be canceled at the former and 345 at the latter, including some on Tuesday. In total, some 134,000 passengers will likely be affected, Lufthansa said.
On Monday, services union Verdi called for ground staff to stage a warning strike amid wage negotiations. The strike would affect all of Lufthansa’s German locations, Verdi said.
Lufthansa meanwhile said it is “working flat out” to ensure operations return to normal ahead of the weekend, when vacation season begins in parts of the country. However, the effects of the strike could lead to further disruption on Thursday and Friday, the company warned.
Passengers affected by cancellations will be rebooked on alternative flights where possible, Lufthansa said. However, the capacity available is “very limited,” it said.
