Select cleaning products meant to rid homes of harmful germs may leave already sick people vulnerable to a new infection.
Clorox is recalling a handful of its scented Pine-Sol products due to a contamination bacteria that can lead to serious infection for people with weakened immune systems.
The voluntary recall, announced by the company Tuesday, does not include Original Pine-Sol, in pine scent.
According to the cleaning product-maker

and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Pine-Sol Scented Multi-Surface Cleaners (in Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave and Lemon Fresh scents), CloroxPro Pine-Sol All Purpose Cleaners (in Lavender Clean, Sparkling Wave, Lemon Fresh and Orange Energy scents) and Clorox Professional Pine-Sol Lemon Fresh Cleaners are being recalled.
“We are conducting this recall to safeguard your health and wellbeing,” Clorox’s Pine-Sol brand said on its recall website. “Importantly, Original Pine-Sol… is not included in this recall and you may continue to safely use it as intended.”
It’s the second recall of popular products from a well-known consumer giant in recent weeks.
The U.S. division of Unilever
ULVR,
has issued the voluntary recall of 19 aerosol dry-shampoo products, the company announced. The recall affects select dry shampoos, including Dove, Suave, TRESemmé and TIGI’s Rockaholic and Bed Head, produced before October 2021.
They’ve been recalled after experts flagged the products for “potentially elevated levels” of benzene, a chemical increasingly known through scientific study to cause cancer in humans with long-term exposure. Benzene has also been a targeted chemical by studies looking at exposure in homes that use natural gas stoves.

Benzene exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. The CDC says that immediate signs of high-level exposure include dizziness, vomiting, unconsciousness and, in especially severe cases, more serious illness and death by blood cancers such as leukemia.
A complete list of the affected dry-shampoo products, along with consumer UPC codes, can be found here. No other products from Unilever or its brands are affected by its recall.
