Getting back with an ex boyfriend after he has been overseas or been on assignment can be difficult and it is hard to know where to start. Being deployed and away from family and friends can change a person and you may find that your boyfriend is not quite the person you knew before he left.

Sometimes when a man has been overseas depending on what he did, he have may been in some traumatic situations and seen things that he will not forget in a while. It is certain that he is not the same person who left you and it will be a good idea to go slow in rebuilding a relationship. You may need to start dating again as if you had never dated before. Take your time to get to know each other again.

As you both have changed over the time you were separated, you may now be more compatible. On the other hand, you may be less compatible. This is something you will need to explore. You cannot build your relationship solely on past shared memories; you need to build future memories going forward. Perhaps you are no longer meant to be together. This is something that you will need to find out over time.

In these circumstances, it is a good idea to take your time. Go on dates and spend time chatting, enjoying being with each other. Perhaps spend some time away from friends and family so that you can be alone and have some quality time together away from distractions. Find some things that you both enjoy and go do them. Things like horse riding, bowling, skiing and travel as some examples. Whatever you both enjoy doing and have some adventures together. After serving a tour of duty your man will want to do some everyday things and just need some well needed “R and R.”

Being in a relationship is not always romantic candle-lit dinners and bunches of roses. It is about getting on with each other on a daily basis through whatever comes along. It is about a commitment to each other and building a strong relationship both emotionally and physically. It is about having each other’s backs during the tough times. It is the depth of this connection, which keeps them going.

It is worthwhile to note that when you are involved with someone who is in the military you are taking a more difficult route. All relationships take effort and can go through difficult times but when your partner is a military person, there is another dimension added to your relationship. You will need to be prepared for being apart for varying periods of time and may even need to be posted overseas for a period together as a couple. This lifestyle is not without danger and there is a higher risk of injury or death.

Part of having a relationship with your military boyfriend means accepting the kind of work he does and supporting him in his choice of career. You cannot fall in love and then expect him to give up his work for you.

There will be aspects of his life that he will not be at liberty to share with you, so being able to trust your man will be paramount. You will have to accept that he must never speak of some things of which he has been involved.

Getting back with an ex boyfriend after he has been away on deployment may be a challenge but also exciting as well. Both you and he will be starting out afresh and have your whole future ahead of you to enjoy together.
