Twitter is removing spam profiles
Twitter says that perhaps the reason behind this is the removal of spam profiles on Twitter. In a post, Twitter explains that the company asks (most arbitrarily) to verify accounts by password or phone number. “We do this regularly to help prevent spam and keep all accounts safe,” the company said. This essentially means that the platform checks accounts that either project offline behavior or act as troll accounts created with temporary email IDs.
One reason for the closure of Twitter through SMS service
For example, last year Twitter decided to shut down Twitter via SMS service in most countries. The company has taken this decision to protect the Twitter account of the users after the vulnerabilities in the SMS service. Twitter noted that due to the removal of the service, some users may see a drop in their number of followers. The company had said that removing these inactive accounts would ensure more active and authentic followers on Twitter profiles of users.
