VW's electric ID.4 gets a price cut, and big changes

Volkswagen has made some big changes to its ID.4 electric vehicle for 2023.

They start with a dramatic price cut. The 2022 ID.4 starts at $41,230, plus $1,295 delivery fee. The 2023 model will start at $37,495 – a $3,735 price cut. VW

has kept the delivery charge steady, even at a time when many automakers are raising destination fees to account for soaring fuel costs.

The lower price comes thanks to two big changes. One affects buyers – the cheapest ID.4 now comes with a smaller battery, good for a VW-estimated 208 miles of driving range. That’s 43 fewer than last year’s shortest-range model. Since most Americans drive fewer than 30 miles daily, the change will suit shoppers needing a commuter and around-town-errand car. But it makes road trips a complicated prospect.

That entry-level model, called the ID.4 Standard, is fairly well-equipped for a base edition. It comes with dual-zone climate control, a 12-inch central touchscreen, interior lighting adjustable to dozens of colors, and heated seats.

It uses one electric motor driving the rear wheels, good for 201 horsepower.

The other change doesn’t affect buyers but helps with the price. The ID.4 will be built in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Last year, only German factories produced the crossover.

Higher trim levels include the Pro, Pro S, and Pro S Plus. They all get a larger, 82-kilowatt-hour battery pack. In rear-wheel-drive form, they manage up to 275 miles of range. An all-wheel-drive setup robs them of some range but pushes power to 295 horsepower.
