Check out GMC’s new electric Sierra truck: up to 400 miles of range, luxury cabin

For the 2024 model year, GMC will sell an all-electric Sierra full-size truck with up to 9,500 pounds of towing power, 1,300 pounds of payload capacity, and 400 miles of range.

The 2024 GMC Sierra EV is the brand’s third electric vehicle, and in many ways, its most conventional. While the Hummer EV pickup and SUV are off-road toys with six-figure price tags when fully equipped, the Sierra name will be attached to a “full range of Sierra EV models…with MSRPs starting around $50,000,” the company says.

Top of the line first, work trucks later

The first one out of the gate, though, will not be aimed at those who just need a work truck and want to avoid the gas pump. Rather, GMC will launch a hyper-luxurious limited edition called the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, with a price tag of $107,000 plus an undisclosed delivery fee.

Up to 754 horsepower

GMC provided mechanical details only on the most extreme Edition 1 at press time. It should, the company says, have estimated totals of “754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque in Max Power mode.”

The Sierra EV rides on the same Ultium platform as the Hummer twins and the Cadillac Lyriq SUV. A skateboard-like combination of batteries, electric motors, and suspension components, engineers can scale it up or down to build vehicles of different sizes and capabilities.

That could allow GMC to produce versions less powerful for lesser prices.

sells its full-size truck as both the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra. The same will be true in electric from. Chevy took the wraps off of its own Silverado EV earlier this year.

The Silverado EV may be a guide – it gets between 510 and 664 horsepower in various trims. “After the launch of the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, GMC will introduce additional trims with a selection of ranges and trailering ratings,” the company says.

It borrows the Hummer’s signature trick, the sideways “crab walk,” with 4-wheel steering. An Air Ride Adaptive Suspension can raise or lower the truck by up to 2 inches for off-road ground clearance.

Functions as a power source

“The 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1’s Power Station Pro allows the truck to be used as a mobile power source in multiple situations,” GMC says. The truck offers 10.2 kW of power through up to 10 outlets to power tools in the field or toys at the tailgate.

“When properly equipped, the Sierra EV Denali’s Power Station Pro can even power another EV,” GMC says. It can also power a home in a blackout, though GMC hasn’t said how long the truck can manage that on its own. It’s designed to work with GM’s new Ultium Home residential power setup, the company says. Together, the truck and residential battery can power a home for “up to 21 days.”

The truck alone is likely capable of much less.

Blocky truck meets smooth EV look

Viewed from most angles, the Sierra EV is indistinguishable from a conventional pickup. From the front, it wears a body-color shield in place of a grille, surrounded by LED lighting and bearing a backlit GMC logo. Inverted L-shaped daytime running lights frame the shield.

seems to have claimed the word “frunk” for its F-150 Lightning so GMC is calling this an “eTrunk.”  It has internal drains for use as a cooler, and includes a 120-volt power outlet.

It comes exclusively as a crew cab model with a 5-foot, 11-inch cargo bed.

GMC’s most minimalist luxury cabin

The cabin is as close to a sleek, minimalist design as we’re likely to see from luxury-oriented GMC. It’s centered around a 16.8-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen but sensibly includes physical controls for climate and volume.

The materials are the same soft leather, grain-matched open-poor wood and aluminum trim that have become a Denali signature. But they frame a simple, elegant dashboard.

An 11-inch screen takes the place of the driver’s instrument display. A 14-inch multi-color head-up display keeps vital information directly in the driver’s line of sight.

Fourteen available cameras provide 360-degree views around the truck.

Edition 1 will ship with the latest edition of GM’s Super Cruise hands-free highway driving software. The newest version can tow a trailer and change lanes without driver input. It functions on more than 400,000 miles of pre-mapped highway in the U.S. and Canada.

GMC opened reservations for the truck the moment they announced it.
