Amazon’s Prime Video streamlines its user interface with a new look

Amazon.com Inc.’s Prime Video is revamping its much-maligned user interface ahead of its major fall releases.

Prime Video said Monday that viewers who stream the service through Amazon Fire TV devices and the Android app will see the changes first, starting in mid-August. The redesign will be rolled out to users on other devices, the web and Apple’s iOS later this year.

“This redesign simplifies site navigation, making it easier for customers to explore Prime Video’s expansive offerings and find the content they love,” Prime Video said in a statement.

For years, the streaming service has been criticized for its clunky user interface and outdated appearance.

said improvements include a more user-friendly navigation system, an easier way to watch live and programmed sports, an improved search function and new carousels — similar in look to rival Netflix’s

— featuring new and notable programming, such as a “Top 10” list of most-watched content.

It will also address a longtime complaint by clearly marking with a blue checkmark which series and movies are included for free under the Prime subscription, and which cost extra to rent or buy.

The upgrade comes ahead of a big fall for Prime Video, which will premiere the blockbuster “Lord of the Rings” prequel series “The Rings of Power” in September, along with the exclusive arrival of NFL Thursday Night Football.
